UrbanLight Recording artiste, Gregory XIII (Gregory Juma-Wandera) is a relatively unknown name in Kenya's Christian music circles, but he is a servant
out on a mission.
Born in 1985 in Busia (Kenya), this intelligently lyrical emcee started doing music as a Battle Rapper at the infamous Sabrina's Club, Kampala during his college days in Uganda in 2004.
He however emerged, as G.R.E. Tha StreetKing, with the wake of the Kisumu-based hip-hop group, Tha Milli (2007/08). He featured in most of the group's tracks that topped charts in the lakeside city.
He absorbed and honed the poetic and witty wordplays that were a trademark of the group before he accepted Christ into his life in late 2010.
After a two-year hiatus, during which he underwent discipleship at his local church, he released his maiden christian recording, "The Warsheep Project Vol.1 Mixtape" (2012).
The project, which comprised Hip-hop covers for common worship choruses, dwelt on the topic of worship and is an intense guide on this topic, complete with mini-sermons on what, why and hows of worship.
The "Warsheep Project Vol.1" mixtape, which is available as a FREE DOWNLOAD, got immense online success, in terms of downloads in its first year of release. This is despite not making it into Kenya’s mainstream media until a couple of years later.
"Barbershop Rap Sessions EP" was the sophomore project for the K’Town-bred emcee. Released in 2013, it sought to reach out to non-believers who are aware that their way of life is not in the way that God desires it to be and are trying to sort out their issues before surrendering their lives to Christ.
This EP brought to light some of the struggles that some of the born-again christians
go through on a day-to-day basis in an effort to encourage non-believers that Christ did not
come for the perfect and that no one is perfect.
It aimed at enlighting them that Christ takes the imperfect and perfects them through a process and not in a one-time event.
Despite his low-key tendencies. He has had the opportunity of sharing the stage with various local and international acts including Lampmode recording artiste, British rapper, S.O. and and the reknowned intellectual and HumbleBeast recording artiste, Sho Baraka.
Gregory XIII has come from a background of teenage rebellion, street life, alcoholism and substance abuse to be a passionate servant of the Lord, a loving husband and father of one. He now employs his literary skills in a much improved way as he shares his experiences to deliver The Holy Word to his audience.
Gregory XIII is a member of International Christian Centre, Imara (Kenya) which is a part of the Kenya Assemblies of God and strives to use God’s gifts to give God back the glory. Gregory XIII is also a talented designer and runs a brand design business under the moniker, Wayo Ink.
